You Are the First Generation With a 24/7 Mentor in Your Pocket

Let me tell you something strange about the time we are living in.

For the first time in human history, millions of young people are walking around with a mentor in their pocket.

Not a motivational quote.
Not a YouTube video.

An actual thinking partner.

Someone you can ask questions.
Someone who can explain things.
Someone who can practise conversations with you.
Someone who can correct you without laughing.

Morning, afternoon, midnight — it is available.

And the funny thing is, many people still don’t realise what they are carrying.

The same phone that can help you practise speaking, prepare interviews, explore ideas, or improve your thinking… is mostly being used for reels and scrolling.

I’m not judging. I also scroll sometimes.

But I want young people in India to understand something important.

You are living in a time that previous generations never had.

For most of human history, learning depended on access.

If you had a good teacher, you were lucky.

If you lived in the right city, you were lucky.

If you could afford coaching classes, you were lucky.

And if you had someone to practise speaking with regularly, you were very lucky.

Because speaking is not something you learn only by studying.

It is like learning to swim.

You can read ten books about swimming.

You can watch swimming videos.

But at some point, you still have to enter the water.

This is where most learners struggle.

They understand English.

They know vocabulary.

They know grammar.

But they never had enough practice partners.

So when the moment comes to speak — in an interview, meeting, or presentation — the voice becomes quiet.

Not because they don’t know English.

Because they haven’t practised using it.

I have seen this for more than ten years now.

As a coach, I have worked with students, professionals, engineers, designers, lawyers, trainers, artists — people from many different fields.

Through NGOs and different programs in Mumbai, I have also worked with young volunteers and students from very different backgrounds.

Some come from privileged environments.

Some come from very modest homes.

But the pattern is surprisingly similar.

Most people don’t lack knowledge.

They lack safe places to practise.

Many learners are intelligent.
They just don’t get enough chances to speak without feeling judged.

That’s why something interesting is happening today.

AI is quietly becoming a practice partner.

It doesn’t laugh when you make mistakes.

It doesn’t get irritated if you ask the same question again.

It doesn’t rush you.

You can try, fail, try again, and improve.

In many ways, it might become the most patient coach ever created.

Not perfect.
Not magical.

But incredibly patient.

Now here is the part that matters.

Having access to something powerful does not automatically change your life.

You can carry a gym membership card in your pocket for years.

Your muscles will not grow.

You still have to go to the gym.

AI is similar.

It is not a miracle teacher.

Think of it more like a practice gym for your mind.

You go there to practise.

To test ideas.

To improve your speaking.

To prepare for interviews.

To explore questions.

To think better.

When I observe young people today, I see two types of learners slowly emerging.

The first group is still waiting.

Waiting for the perfect course.
Waiting for a teacher.
Waiting to feel confident.

The second group has started experimenting.

They ask questions.
They practise conversations.
They prepare speeches.
They explore ideas.

They treat AI like a practice coach.

Over the next few years, the difference between these two groups will become very visible.

Not because one group is smarter.

Because one group is practising more.

So here is the simple thought I want to leave you with.

Previous generations had to search for mentors.

Sometimes they travelled far to find them.

Sometimes they never found them.

You might be the first generation in history carrying a mentor in your pocket.

But that privilege only matters if you actually start the conversation.

Otherwise, it is just another app on your phone.

And that would be a terrible waste of opportunity.
